'He Gave Us a Voice' - Sha'Carri Richardson On How Alexis Ohanian is Redefining Female Athletics
Track and field star Sha’Carri Richardson is set to play a pivotal role in Alexis Ohanian’s new league, Athlos, which launches next year. Richardson will not only compete but also serve as an advisor-owner, holding an ownership stake in a groundbreaking model for the sport alongside fellow athletes like Gabby Thomas and Tara Davis-Woodhall.
This athlete-ownership structure is a first for track and field, and Richardson has publicly expressed her gratitude to the Reddit co-founder for the initiative. She shared her thoughts during a recent conversation with Ohanian's wife, tennis legend Serena Williams, and her sister, Venus Williams.
A New Voice for Track and Field
While Richardson has not yet competed in Ohanian's previous Athlos events, the former 100m world champion attended the 2025 showcase during her offseason. There, she participated in a meet-and-greet with fans and other high-profile guests, including Ohanian and the Williams sisters.
In her discussion with Serena and Venus, Richardson highlighted Ohanian's impact on female athletes. "He gave us a voice, you know, in a lot of different ways," she explained. "Like creating the meet, just creating different opportunities where we can show up, and I think that was an opportunity that I was definitely grateful to be a part of."
Richardson emphasized the broader significance of the new league. "I know the other ladies as well, but also it’s a stepping stone, truly, for athletes to see what's possible and for other things," she added, expressing her excitement for how Athlos will contribute to the growth of women's track and field.
Eyes on the LA 2028 Olympics
Looking ahead, Richardson is already focused on the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. She noted her enthusiasm for the event's schedule, which places the women's 100m—her specialty—on the opening day of competition, giving women's track and field a prominent spotlight.
"Track and field is having its moment, and the road to LA28 is about to be something special, especially for the women’s sprints," Richardson said. "The talent, energy, and competition… it’s all going to shine."
The American sprinter, who secured a silver medal in the 100m at the 2024 Paris Olympics, is aiming for individual gold on home soil. "Just look at day one of the LA Games," she stated. "I’m locked in on accomplishing some personal goals and doing my part to help the sport keep growing."
