KCB comprehensively thrashed Menengai Oilers to reach the final of the Impala Floodlit Trophy against Nondies for the second year in a row, but Olago remains far from convinced.

KCB Rugby head coach Curtis Olago insists that his team are just “30 or 40 percent” ready for the new Kenya Cup season despite storming their way to the final of the Impala Floodlit Trophy scheduled to take place this weekend against Nondies for the second year in a row.

KCB brushed aside Menengai Oilers 41-22 in their semi-final clash to set up a date with Nondescripts in the final, who themselves edged Black Blad 20-14 in the last game of the semi-finals on Saturday.

KCB had taken a comfortable lead, but allowed the Oilers to reduce the deficit considerably towards the end of the match, which left Olago far from pleased.

“We cannot keep playing in halves, in 15 minutes and quarters, so that is something we are looking to go and work on in training,” Olago said.

“I mean, that start-stop is crazy, we want more ball in play.”

KCB have won the title nine times, and could surpass Mean Machine should they beat Nondies in the final, but Olago insists it will depend on how the team trains during the week.

“That will depend on how we train during the week, I mean, it is not about the win, it is about what we are fixing right now.

“It is pre-season, It is all about fixing stuff, we are looking about fixing certain issues before the new season now.”

“We are still at 30 percent, we still have a lot to cover. We are still in pre-season, we only work for a couple of months, one or two months.

“We still have another eight weeks to go. We are at 30 or 40 percent ready so far.”

The bankers beat Nondies 20-3 in last year’s final at the Impala Grounds to collect their second consecutive title following their win in 2019.

They will be looking for a third consecutive crown for an event that is traditionally the curtain raiser for the regular 15s season — the Kenya Cup.
