Kenya Sevens overcame a fightback from Samoa to record victory in their opening match of the promotion-relegation playoff at the Grand Final in Madrid.

Kenya Sevens got their promotion journey off to a winning start as they edged Samoa 19-12 in their opening match of the Grand Final in Madrid, Spain on Friday.

Shujaa are seeking an immediate return to the World Sevens Series following their relegation last May and would cap off a great year with clinching their ticket in the high stakes tournament.

They showed that they are hungry to regain their place in the big time with the win over Samoa but it was not a straight forward victory.

Kenya raced into a 12-0 lead after tries from captain Vincent Onyala and speedster Patrick Odongo, one converted by Tony Omondi, but they allowed Samoa back into the game as the Pacific ireland nation fought back to tie it 12-12 at the break.

After the interval, Kevin Wambua’s men upped the ante, Odongo sealing his brace and Omondi adding the extra’s for the 19-12 win which saw them stay in the hunt for a place in the semi-final.

Kenya can guarantee their place with a win against Spain on Friday night (10.18pm Kenyan time) which will make Saturday’s clash with Chile (8.15pm) less tedious.

A place in the semi-final will see them meet any of the teams in Pool A which has Canada, USA, Uruguay and Germany.

The playoff involves teams that finished in the top four in the second tier Challenger Series and the sides that were placed ninth to 12th in the World Series with the top four from the tournament earning a place in the top-flight next season.
