Kenya Lionesses players have blamed Scottish referee Finlay Brown over what they termed a mistake that cost them an Olympic ticket during the Africa Sevens final against South Africa

Kenya Lionesses player Grace Adhiambo has lashed out at Scottish referee Finlay Brown over what she termed poor officiating during their Africa Sevens cup final loss to South Africa in Tunisia on Sunday.

The Lionesses missed out on an automatic slot in next year’s Olympics after suffering a 12-7 loss to South Africa but an emotional Adhiambo feels they stood a chance had the referee not made a mistake.

“The girls really wanted it and we pushed ourselves through the end. As much as we lost that game, we did not lose because we were tired but we lost the game because of the referee’s mistake,” said Adhiambo, holding back tears.

“It was a clear knock-on, everyone saw it, he just played it on, and continued playing. You can go and watch the game and see if it was okay.

“Congratulations to South Africa they go to the Olympics, I know we have one more time to redeem ourselves. The experience was good and we say thank you.”

Nadine Roos scored the first try for South Africa to hand her side a 5-0 lead at halftime but Sharon Auma gave Kenya hope when she beat two defenders to touch down with Adhiambo converting for a 7-0 lead.

With the game staying tight, there appeared to be a knock-on before Maria Thshiremba sprinted to the try line to score for South Africa, Roos converting in the dying minutes of the game for the 12-7 win.

It was a disappointing end for Kenya who had hoped to secure Olympic qualification for a second straight time and even though they still have a chance through the repechage, it will be more difficult.

The Lionesses will have to emerge victorious at the grueling 2024 Final Olympic Qualification Tournament to seal their ticket to the Paris Games.

Kenya started brilliantly, beating Zambia 27-0, Ghana 41-0, and Madagascar 20-17 on Saturday before thrashing Ugandans 27-0 in the semi-final on Sunday.
