The experienced ex-skipper has revealed that he is one of those being considered for a place on the national team’s technical bench.

Former Kenya Sevens captain Andrew Amonde has confirmed that he is likely to be part of the coaching setup of the national team, Shujaa.

Amonde’s admission gives credence to reports that current Shujaa assistant coach Kevin ‘Bling’ Wambua is set to take over the job following the departure of Englishman Damien McGrath with the former skipper and Kabras Sugar tactician Carlos Katywa appointed as his assistant.

“There is a chance that I might be there so it’s just a matter of time and seeing how things will go in the next few days,” Amonde told Pulse Sports.

“If I get a chance to assist the Shujaa and see myself grow as a coach, it will be a plus on my side. We’re crossing our fingers to see what the (Kenya Rugby) Union will decide and if we get a chance to be part of it, it will be a good challenge to see how I am able to grow internationally.”

Amonde will be bringing a wealth of experience to the technical bench, if his appointment is confirmed, given he was part of the Shujaa squad since 2006, when he made his debut, before captaining the side from 2012 to 2022 when he retired.

He was part of Kenya’s squad at the 2009, 2013, and 2018 Sevens World Cup, when they finished third, fourth, and 16th respectively, before leading the country at the 2016 and the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Shujaa also reached a number of finals in the Word Rugby Sevens Series with their only Cup win being the 2016 Singapore Sevens but they have fallen off since then, meaning Amonde and co have a tough job of returning them back following their relegation in May.

“It will take a lot to return to the World Series, investment and exposure is the only way our team will be able to grow and get back to the standards they had already set,” added Amonde.

“It was sad to get relegated but it is a wakeup call to Kenyans to support the team because this is the time they need the support the most so that they can get their place back.”

Kenya Sevens will begin their journey back to the top with next month’s Africa Sevens which will also act as the 2024 Olympics qualifiers.
