The Menengai Oilers player has had a good individual debut season, scoring 10 tries and amassing 60 points.

Kenya Sevens outside center, Denis Abukuse believes that they can safely survive relegation from the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series after it was officially confirmed they would take part in a relegation playoff.

Shujaa have struggled for much of the season both on and off the pitch. Following a dismal start to the season in the Hong Kong and Dubai legs, players complained of going for months without allowances, which prompted Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba to intervene late last year.

Although a long-standing sponsor was able to get back on board in efforts to help the side reduce its financial woes, it still could not stop highly experienced players like Willy Ambaka from hanging their boots, leaving head coach Damien McGrath to work with a core of promising but inexperienced players, including Abukuse.

“It has been a tough first season for me because it took a while for me to gain the courage of playing against the best players in the world, which star-struck me for a while if I am being honest,” Ambukuse said.

Kenya managed to finish 13th in the recently concluded Toulouse 7s, with Abukuse scoring three tries against Samoa and champions-elect New Zealand.

The Menengai Oilers player scored the only try of the game for Shujaa against the All Blacks Sevens, kicking the ball forward before catching it again and converting it.

"I was very determined to score against them. They are the best team in the world and although we lost, it was a proud moment for me.

"Toulouse was a good tournament for me because I was able to improve the defensive aspects of my game, on top of being already decent in attack.”

The former Bungoma High School player has now scored 10 tries this season and recorded 60 points. He believes Shujaa can be the 12th team for next season’s series.

“We are playing the HSBC relegation playoffs in London and I believe that Kenya will be 12th if we play the way we played the last two games (against USA and Japan) in Toulouse.”

Shujaa will play the promotion/relegation playoff alongside Tonga, Uruguay, and Canada in London this weekend.
