Mutai, who had been under pressure to step down from his role as chairman virtually since the year he was elected in 2023, has resigned from his role, with Moses Ndale appointed acting boss.
The Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) has been plunged deeper into a leadership crisis following the resignation of Chairman Alexander 'Sasha' Mutai, who stepped down effective immediately during following a Special General Meeting held at the RFUEA Grounds on Friday, 30 May 2025.
Mutai’s resignation marks a dramatic turn in the ongoing power struggle at the heart of Kenyan rugby. The KRU Board has swiftly moved to appoint Mr. Moses Ndale, the current Vice Chairman, as Acting Chairman for a period of 14 days.
Within this window, the Board is expected to meet and elect a new Chairman from among its existing members, in accordance with the Union’s governance constitution.

Ferdinand Omanyala and Bayanda Walaza Floored by Surprise Australian Challenger at Kip Keino Classic
Ferdinand Omanyala and Bayanda Walaza did not live up to expectations at Kip Keino Classic as they were beaten by little-known Australian Lachlan Kennedy.
Ndale has served as Vice Chairman since September 2022, and now finds himself at the helm during one of the most turbulent periods in the Union’s recent history.
Mutai, who had already faced an ouster attempt in March 2025 by a faction of the board citing “integrity issues,” has consistently claimed that the resistance against him is driven by forces trying to protect entrenched corruption.
Heading into the Union's Annual General Meeting (AGM), it was widely speculated that his critics were plotting to force a complete exit from office.

Michael Olunga: 7 Potential Destinations for Harambee Stars Captain After Al Duhail Exit
Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga has left Qatari club Al Duhail after a hugely successful four-and-a-half-years but which countries could he end up playing in next?
The internal strife has not gone unnoticed on the global stage. World Rugby has raised alarm over the ongoing turmoil, warning that a governance vacuum within KRU could seriously hinder the development of the sport, both locally and regionally.
“We urge the KRU leadership to share full, transparent, and accurate information with all stakeholders… This is essential to enable informed decision-making and to safeguard the long-term integrity and sustainability of Kenyan rugby,” read a letter from World Rugby.
The situation escalated further when KRU Secretary Ray Olendo introduced a fresh motion at the AGM seeking Mutai’s removal, citing accusations of misappropriating Ksh13.2 million through fraudulent invoicing.
The financial controversy has also drawn attention from Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, who has publicly called for a thorough probe into the Union’s operations, finances, and top officials.
