High Court judge Lawrence Mugambi had issued orders that granted the Sports Ministry 14 days to put their house in order.

Despite its suspension by the High Court 16 days ago, Sports Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ababu Namwamba has announced that the Talanta Hela Initiative will officially be launched on Friday, June 9 by President William Ruto.

High Court judge Lawrence Mugambi had issued orders that granted the Sports Ministry 14 days to put their house in order and respond to the petition and application on Tuesday, May 23. Although, there has been no public communication from the Ministry of Sports in response to the verdict.

“Pending the hearing and determination of this application interparties, an interim order be and is hereby issued suspending the special issue of the Kenya Gazette Notice 1649(Vol.CXXV No.32) dated February 10,2023 publishing the establishment of the Talanta Hela Council and its Technical Committees and consequent appointments for a period of 3 years effective from February 10,2023,” the statement issued by Mugambi read in part.

However, the stakeholders seem unfazed by the ruling and Namwamba has announced that the launch will be going ahead as planned on Friday.

The Sports CS added that the President is passionate about sports in the country and he wants to ensure that sports people are also able to earn from their hard work, just like people in other occupations.

“The President will be unveiling Talanta Hela and for us, this is a big step because the President is very passionate about sports and he wants to see the sports people earn a living from their labour.

"Through sport, we can expand and create livelihoods for millions of talented people and that’s why he is igniting the initiative tomorrow at State House

"It is about deliberately and intentionally transforming talent into an economic value. To have something you've never had, you have to do something you have never done,” Namwamba said in an interview with Homeboyz Radio.

He said that the government is the main anchor of the initiative and that they are willing to partner with corporates around to ensure that the initiative runs seamlessly.

Namwamba also revealed that the final destination for the talented sportspeople is the Kenya Academy of Sports and the ministry is determined to keep the conveyor belt, with the ultimate goal of monetising the talents.
