Muteshi was unveiled by the French side Stade Caennais RC in January.

Rugby sensation Bethuel Anami Muteshi alias ‘Baku’ has advised youngsters to delve into sporting activities and exploit the numerous opportunities that games bring along.

He trashed the notion that students engaging in sports under-perform in their studies and clarified that rugby enabled him to manage his time well and to remain disciplined.

The talented backrower said that in as much as he is keen on making a mark in the sport, he also wanted to make a mark in his education, a tough journey but worth all the struggle.

“It teaches you to fit into training sessions, social obligations and maybe work as well. The activities contribute to a huge part of a students’ experience as they are beneficial and expose one to a lifelong learning experience.

Chasing my passion for rugby meant that the barrel of education too must be pushed to be an all-rounded student. It called for sleepless nights to study hours on end just to catch up on the assignments and notes,” Muteshi told Strathmore University’s Jemmy Kamau.

In January, Muteshi was unveiled by the French side Stade Caennais RC and he has termed his three-month stay in France as a learning process.

With his little knowledge of French, the 24-year-old revealed that he found it difficult to communicate but he has since enrolled in French classes and things are progressing smoothly for him.

“The door man, bus driver, everyone, probably, speaks in French! But currently, I am enrolled in a French class with some of my English-speaking team mates, which has significantly helped me in learning the language,” he said.

Muteshi is also keen to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Humphrey Kayange, Peter Waitere and Joshua Chisanga among many other rugby players.

“Everyone has that one person they look up to. A hero. A mentor. Be it for their height, skill, talent, zeal, they fuel our passion to be successful,” he said.

Going forward, Muteshi is just keen on building his career in the sport as he looks forward to graduate in June with a Bachelor of Commerce.

“What next? Time will tell… but for now, rugby is my career,” he said.
