Alexander 'Sasha' Mutai is plotting big for rugby in Kenya as he vies for the chairman position unopposed ahead of the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) elections slated for Friday, March 24.
Speaking on KTN and NTV, Mutai revealed that his first goal is to make sure the finances of the teams are guaranteed to avoid players from being stranded.
He observed that there is enough talent in the country and he would not want to see the talent go to waste. Mutai has also promised that by the end of his term in office, rugby will have a stadium.
Mutai is also keen on growing rugby in schools by working closely with school heads. He revealed that he was at St. Peters Mumias to watch the school games and he noted that he was inspired by what he saw. He also urged the schools to invest in sports.
“I don’t want a repeat of what happened last year where players seek for help on social media. I want to make sure we have finances for the sport. We want to grow the game. I was impressed by the talent there and we don’t want to betray that talent. The players are not the problem at all,” he said.
Mutai had initially vied for chairman in 2017 and 2019 but lost. After two consecutive losses, Mutai revealed that the reason he keeps vying is that he has a passion for the sport and would love to see rugby grow.
He noted that since 2017, he now knows better and he is keen to work together with the directors who will be elected to make rugby reinstate its previous success.
He was the Director of Kenya 7s from 2006 to 2010 and it was during that period that they got to the semi final of the World Cup in 2009.
During his time as Vice Chairman in KRU, Mutai oversaw hosting of successful tournaments including the time when the 7s reached the World Cup semifinal again in 2013.
Mutai revealed that he would want to drive the men to qualify for the 2027 World Cup and the women to qualify for the Women’s Rugby World Cup. “I want to bring in partners again so that they can support us,” he added.
He also promised to ensure that the team will have a secure training environment.
