Harambee Stars begin their CHAN 2024 campaign with a tricky match against DR Congo on Sunday and here is all you need to know about the game.

Harambee Stars’ time has finally arrived as they begin their 2024 African Nations Championships (CHAN 2024) campaign with a tough match against DR Congo on Sunday.

Kenya are making their debut in the CHAN tournament against a DR Congo side that have won the competition twice, the joint most, and are featuring in their seventh edition this year.

That means Benni McCarthy and his team have their work cut out Kasarani Stadium but given they will be playing at home at a sold-out stadium, they have no option but to win the game.

Kenya come into the game on the back of mixed results under McCarthy, whose tenure has seen him take charge of four matches, winning one, drawing two and losing the other while his preparations has been disrupted by star players pulling out after securing lucrative moves abroad.

McCarthy’s reign has seen him draw 3-3 with The Gambia before losing 2-1 at home to Gabon, both in the World Cup qualifiers, while in June, they played Chad twice in the space of three days, drawing 0-0 before a 2-1 win.

However, ahead of CHAN 2024, he has lost strikers Moses Shumah and Emmanuel Osoro, who joined Zambian giants Power Dynamos, while Mohammed Bajaber has signed for Tanzanian heavyweights Simba SC.

Meanwhile, DR Congo coach Otis Ngoma has admitted his team had little time to train for the match as the players have just returned after their holidays but is banking on a squad that has a mixture of youth and experience.

The Congolese come into the game on the back of five straight wins in all competitions, including 1-0 over Mali and 3-1 victory past Madagascar in June although most of the players who featured in those matches are not at CHAN 2024.

This will be the eighth meeting between Kenya and DR Congo and in the previous seven, the Congolese have bossed this fixture, winning four to Kenya’s two, while one game ended in a draw.

That draw was their last meeting, which took place in June 2019, as Harambee Stars forced 1-1 stalemate at home with the Leopards.
