Kenya will kick off their CHAN 2024 campaign with a home match against DR Congo on Sunday and if they win or draw, the government has a major reward that totals to close to Ksh1 billion.

This is after President Ruto announced that each member of the Harambee Stars delegation, including players and members of the technical team, will be rewarded Ksh1 million for a win while if they draw, Ksh500,000 will go to each of them.

That means the government will fork out close to or over Ksh30 million to Harambee Stars every time they win a match for the 25 players and the other members of the technical bench, who are led by head coach Benni McCarthy.

Harambee Stars will play four group matches and if they manage to win all of them, each member of the team will be Ksh4 million richer, while four draws will earn each of them Ksh2 million.

The rewards do not end there, if Kenya reach the quarter-finals, the team will receive Ksh60 million while Ksh70 million will be their reward for reaching the semi-finals. Harambee Stars have a chance to earn Ksh600 million from the government if they win the CHAN 2024 tournament.

Benni McCarthy Makes Major CHAN 2024 Promise

“We will do our utmost best for everybody to be proud being a Kenyan because they are going to show every bit of spirit coming from these players tomorrow that you as a Kenyan can associate with because of the hard work they have put in up to now,” McCarthy told President Ruto when he met the team on Saturday morning.

“We want to make everyone proud and we will be there until the last man standing come 29th of August. We want to be in that final and we are going to be in that final,” he added.

The President’s reward scheme is even bigger than what tournament organizers CAF have set aside for teams participating in CHAN 2024 as Ksh25.8 million will be rewarded to teams that finish last in groups of five sides.

CAF has set aside Ksh38.7 million for teams that finish fourth or higher in their groups while Ksh58 million will go to each of the eight quarter-finalists.

From CAF, winners will pocket $3.5 million (Ksh451 million) while runners-ups take home $1.2 million (Ksh155 million) as $700,000 (Ksh90 million) and $600,000 (Ksh77 million) goes to teams that finish third and fourth respectively.
