Benni McCarthy has been named the SJAK Coach of the Month of August, marking a rare milestone for a foreign tactician in Kenyan football.
Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has been crowned the Betika/SJAK Coach of the Month for August, becoming only the third foreign coach to lift the coveted award.
He follows in the footsteps of fellow South African Carlos Katywa of Kabras Sugar RFC in April and Burundi’s Etienne Ndayiragije of Kenya Police FC in June.
Benni McCarthy, a South African football legend and the only player from his country to win the UEFA Champions League, with Porto in 2004, guided the Harambee Stars to their first quarterfinal appearance in 38 years at the African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024).

Jackline Barasa (Kenya U20 women’s volleyball team, African Championship winners), and Nelson Jaika (St. Peter’s Boys, Mumias, National Rugby 7s champions) were also in the mix.
“When you top a group with Morocco, DRC, Angola, and Zambia, you count your blessings. Unfortunately, the game we thought we could win became a mission impossible,” Benni McCarthy said.
