The former Bandari FC goalkeeper has shared his views on why top Kenyan players no longer need trials to join clubs abroad.

Harambee Stars goalkeeper Farouk Shikhalo has explained why Kenyan players in the local league and national team no longer need to attend trials before signing with clubs abroad.

Farouk Shikhalo, who recently joined Ethiopian giants St. George SC from Bandari FC, said that trials are mainly meant for players at the early stages of their careers.

Having played professional football for nearly 15 years, the former KCB FC shot-stopper noted that all the necessary information about him is readily available online.

The former Bandari FC goalkeeper noted that since the Football Kenya Federation Premier League is now broadcast, anyone can easily access footage of his performances and analyse his game.

He added that this eliminates the need to travel abroad for trials before earning a contract, or, in some cases, risking not securing a move at all.

Farouk Shikhalo explained that players who feature in the Kenyan league and the national team have moved past the stage of going for trials before securing contracts abroad.

He explained that when an agent represents a player, it is usually enough to mention that the player is a national team member, after which the interested club will request footage rather than arrange trials.

Farouk Shikhalo noted that the broadcasting of the local league by Azam TV has made it easier to access such clips, which was previously a challenge. He observed that players with over five years of league experience already have enough material available online.

Shikhalo further reflected that while it used to be difficult to market local players, the situation has improved since the CHAN tournament, which opened more opportunities for Kenyan footballers.

“If you are playing in the Kenyan league and the national team, you are past being called for trials. What they normally do is, as an agent, you have a player and you are representing them, for instance, me, you just need to say you have a good keeper who plays in the national team,” Farouk Shikhalo said on the Alex Mwakideu TV.

“You don’t need to say that I have to go for trials; the team will ask for clips. If our football is not being aired, then it means we shall not get clips, but now that Azam is airing our league, we can get the clips. I’m past going for trials.

“I believe I am a brand and have been around for about 15 years. If you have played in the league for more than five years, then you will get the information needed. Back then, it was tough to sell players, but after CHAN, we have managed to sell a series of players.”

Farouk Shikhalo’s remarks highlight the growing professionalism and visibility of Kenyan football, as increased media coverage and exposure continue to open doors for local players seeking opportunities abroad.
