'We Got Lucky'-Gor Mahia Assistant Coach’s Brutal Verdict After Scraping Past Tusker

Gor Mahia overcame Tusker 1-0 at the Kasarani Stadium on Saturday in an otherwise even game that saw both sides struggle to really take control of the match.

Gor Mahia assistant coach Bismark Kobi-Mensah says he was satisfied with the result but not the overall performance after his side laboured to a narrow 1–0 victory over Tusker FC at Kasarani.

The champions were far from convincing and struggled to create clear chances, but an early own goal from Collins Odhiambo in the seventh minute proved enough to separate the two sides.

The match began energetically, with Gor Mahia pressing high and forcing Tusker into mistakes. Their breakthrough came almost immediately when right-back Odhiambo miscued a back pass that rolled past the Tusker goalkeeper and into the net.

The early lead seemed like the perfect platform for K’Ogalo to take control, but instead the game developed into a tight, tactical battle with limited goalmouth action.

Gor Mahia midfielder Austine Odhiambo came closest to doubling the lead late in the first half when his long-range strike whistled inches off the post.

Tusker also had their moments, with Denis Oalo and Cliff Oruko forcing saves from the Gor Mahia goalkeeper. However, the match lacked sustained quality in the final third, something both sets of fans noted as the game wore on.

An Important Win

Speaking after the final whistle, Coach Kobi-Mensah was honest in his assessment.

“It’s an important win—three points matter the most,” he said. “But honestly, we were not at our best today. However, the boys showed the signs of a good team: even when you’re not playing your best football, you still manage to get the three points. We are proud of them for that.”

The Ghanaian tactician attributed part of the sluggish performance to the recent international break, which disrupted the team’s preparations, with seven Gor Mahia players going away on international duty with Harambee Stars.

“Sometimes these things happen, even when it’s not what you expect,” he explained. “Seven of the players who started today were away on international duty. We didn’t get them back early enough to prepare properly. It’s not an excuse, but it affects energy levels and overall performance.”

Despite the disjointed attacking display, Kobi-Mensah praised the team’s resilience and game management, which ensured they protected their early lead.

“Still, the boys showed good character. Even without reaching the standards we’ve set for ourselves, we got the three points.”

The result keeps Gor Mahia at the top of the FKF Premier League table with 19 points, continuing their strong start to the season. After losing the opening match, K’Ogalo have now gone on a run featuring seven  matches, two draws, and five wins.

Gor Mahia now shift focus to their next fixture, aiming to build momentum and rediscover the fluency that has characterised their season so far.
