Austin Odhiambo has admitted that Gor Mahia simply have not been good enough after missing out on the league title to Kenya Police ahead of their clash against Nairobi United on Sunday.

Gor Mahia midfielder Austin Odhiambo has admitted that the team owes its fans a big performance in the upcoming FKF Cup final against surprise package Nairobi United, calling the match “our only hope” to redeem what has been a disappointing season for the record Kenyan champions.

Speaking ahead of the high-stakes encounter scheduled for this weekend, Odhiambo struck a reflective and determined tone, acknowledging the frustrations of the club’s loyal supporters.

“The game is big for our club especially given this is our only hope,” said Odhiambo.

“We have endured a hard time and this is the only game that can make the fans proud after having a hard time.”

Gor Mahia missed out on the FKF Premier League title to Kenya Police and were bundled out of the CAF Champions League last September,  leaving the domestic cup as their last shot at silverware. With the weight of expectations now resting on this final, Odhiambo was candid:

“Our fans are used to us being champions. The name itself is a champion. As a player, you have to have the winning mentality and we have to show that we can win because we have really let the fans down this season,” he added.

“I feel that is an opportunity God has given us.”

We Have to Win This Cup - Odhiambo

Club captain Philemon Otieno echoed the sentiment, underlining the urgency and pressure the players are under to deliver.

“It means a lot to us and it is an important game because it is our last hope for this season, so we have to make sure we give a good fight and get positive results tomorrow,” said Otieno.

“Nairobi United is a good team that have floored several top flight teams in the league so we cannot underestimate them. We must approach this game with the seriousness it deserves.”

The towering defender also emphasized the need to put the match to bed early:

“We are ready for the task at hand and mine is just to urge the players that we have to get it done as early as possible.”

Though Gor Mahia head into the final as favourites on paper, they are under no illusions about the challenge posed by Nairobi United, who have defied odds to reach this stage by eliminating several top-tier sides.

A win would not only salvage their season, but also guarantee a return to continental football by qualifying for the CAF Confederation Cup, something both players and fans see as non-negotiable.

“We have to play continental football for our fans,” concluded Odhiambo. “Gor is a big game and we have decided as players we have to win it for our fans, moreso.”
