Junior Stars Final Squad Named for U17 AFCON CECAFA Qualifiers in Ethiopia
Kenya U17 team names final squad for CECAFA Qualifiers in Ethiopia, aiming for AFCON 2026 qualification success.
“The squad is basically what we came up with after two days of trying out players,” he explained.
“We can say it was assembled quite quickly, but unfortunately, we couldn’t include everyone. Some players were unavailable because they were sitting for their final exams at KCAC and couldn’t make it.”
Despite these constraints, Muluya expressed confidence in the current roster, emphasising that the team is prepared to not only participate but also compete fiercely for qualification.
“From what we have now, this is what we need to make the best out of the qualifiers. The tournament is not just about participation; it’s about competing. It’s one of the pathways for the team to play in the World Cups, a tournament held annually for us,” he added.
The coach also highlighted the importance of reaching the final, which guarantees a place at the AFCON.

Vincent Harper helped Walsall maintain their lead at the top of the League 2 table with a win at Newport, while Jonah Ayunga endured a miserable afternoon in Scotland.
“Our main goal is to reach the final because securing a place in the AFCON is tied to making it that far. As the Kenyan team, we believe in going to compete, and if we get to the finals, then we will have secured our spot in the AFCON.”
Building a cohesive and disciplined unit is at the heart of Muluya’s approach. He noted the squad’s focus on defensive solidity and attacking efficiency.
“Good team cohesion is essential. We want to build a team that concedes fewer goals while also scoring some. The cohesiveness of the squad comes from the hard work the players will put in during the few days we have for training.”
Muluya acknowledged the challenges of preparing players who have mostly been inactive due to school commitments and lack of competitive league experience.

Mutahi Bischoff, who attracted the interest of Premier League clubs like Wolves and Sunderland, chose to join RB Salsburg, rivals to Ryan Ogam's Wolfsberger in the Austrian Bundesliga.
“Most of the players have been inactive since many were in schools and not playing competitive games. At this level, they are not participating in any competitive league besides school games,” he said.
The coaching staff has worked diligently to improve the players’ fitness levels and tactical understanding ahead of the tournament.
“As trainers, we have had to work on improving the players’ fitness. The next step is to instill tactical knowledge so that the players can be well-rounded and ready to compete effectively,” Muluya concluded.
The Junior Stars are scheduled to depart for Ethiopia on Monday, with their opening match against Somalia set for November 18.
Their campaign will continue with matches against Rwanda, South Sudan, and the hosts Ethiopia, as they aim to secure their place among Africa’s best youth teams.
