‘We broke the wrong record’ - AFC Leopards coach fumes after Sofapaka draw

AFC Leopards coach Tomas Trucha has hit out his players for setting an unwanted record following their 1-1 draw with Sofapaka on Sunday.

AFC Leopards coach Tomas Trucha has slammed his players for handing an easy goal to Sofapaka while wasting their opportunities following their 1-1 draw on Sunday, April 7.

Leopards conceded one of the quickest goals in Kenyan football history when Rodgers Kipkemboi got past Ingwe's defence to send the ball into the back of the net after just 26 seconds.

The goal gave Leopards a reality check as they had to quickly reorganise themselves and start attacking their opponents’ goal.

Ingwe huffed and puffed until the second half when Victor Omune brought them level but they should have scored more goals through Arthur Gitego, Kayci Odhiambo and Randy Bakari, who wasted clear opportunities, to the disappointment of their coach.

“I told you we wanted to break a record which we broke but it was the wrong one. We conceded very early, 26 seconds,” Trucha told Azam TV after the match.

“Silly goal, it changed the momentum. We had to come back and we spoke about changing things and we scored a goal but we had many chances and we did not score. Finishing was the biggest problem, we created lots of chances but finishing was an issue.”

The Leopards coach would have been delighted by the response of his team who put their opponents on the back foot for most of the contest only for poor finishing to let them down.

The stalemate means Leopards have now gone two league matches without a win, having started the year like a house on fire, but remain eighth on the table with 35 points.

Trucha will rue the missed opportunities as his side have two tough matches coming up, starting with wounded Posta Rangers, who were thrashed 3-0 by Shabana on Saturday, before the Mashemeji derby against league leaders Gor Mahia on April 20.
