The Red Devils have signed talented young defender pending registration, adding fresh strength to Manchester United’s defensive lineup.

Manchester United have officially announced the signing of left-back Diego Leon.

The Paraguayan teenager was effectively secured as a new addition back in January when he signed a pre-contract agreement, but spent the latter half of the season with his club Cerro Porteño as he had to wait until his 18th birthday.

The length of the contract has not yet been officially confirmed. The defender joins the Red Devils in a deal that could reach around £7 million if all add-ons are met and will compete for the starting spot with Patrick Dorgu.

Leon has made 33 appearances for Cerro Porteño, scoring four goals. Initially, there was speculation that he might be sent out on loan, but the player himself recently stated his desire to fight for a first-team place rather than gain experience elsewhere.

He will begin pre-season training with Manchester United on Monday when the first group of players report back.

So far this summer, United have brought in one player, Matheus Cunha, from Wolverhampton Wanderers. Active negotiations have been ongoing for weeks for Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo, but as yet, no agreement has been reached.
