The former Western Stima attacker has left Gor Mahia for a Southeast Asian club after a difficult spell in Lebanese football.

Harambee Stars striker Benson Omala has sealed a sensational move to Cambodian Premier League outfit Visakha FC.

The prolific striker, who was instrumental in Gor Mahia’s recent campaigns, left the country on Thursday, July 3, to pursue his ambition of playing professionally outside Africa.

Omala’s latest transfer comes after a turbulent year that saw him sign with Lebanese Premier League side Al-Safa in August 2024.

That move followed a failed attempt to join Algeria’s JS Saoura, which collapsed due to paperwork delays.

Despite high expectations, his stint in Lebanon quickly turned sour, plagued by unpaid wages and escalating security concerns as the region became unstable.

This was due to the suspension of the Lebanese Premier League due to military strikes in October 2024. Despite the league resuming later, Omala chose not to return,” sources close to the player confirmed.

Instead, he opted to rejoin Gor Mahia temporarily, though his return was complicated by administrative wrangles over his International Transfer Certificate (ITC).

Upon his return to Gor Mahia, Benson Omala was sidelined for some time as his ITC was held by the Lebanese club, which prevented him from playing competitive matches.

The dispute escalated to FIFA, which eventually cleared Omalla to play in April 2025.

Gor Mahia narrowly missed out on the FKF Premier League crown, finishing second, and lost the FKF Cup final 2-1 to Nairobi United at the Ulinzi Sports Complex.

The disappointing end to the season has now coincided with Omalla’s decision to move on once more.

For the 23-year-old striker, whose tally of 45 goals over two seasons propelled Gor Mahia to back-to-back league titles, the ambition to test himself abroad has remained undimmed.

“Benson Omala returned to Gor Mahia briefly following a challenging spell abroad with Lebanese Premier League side Al-Safa,” the club confirmed in a statement reflecting on his time back in Nairobi.

Omala’s departure signals the end of his third stint with Gor Mahia, a club where he matured into one of Kenya’s most recognizable football talents.

The move to Visakha FC marks a rare leap for a Kenyan player into Southeast Asian football.

The Cambodian Premier League has seen growing investment in recent years, attracting foreign players from across Asia and beyond.

Even before sealing his Cambodian switch, Omala’s camp had signaled that the striker remained keen to explore opportunities beyond Africa.

“His dream of going abroad has not faded, as it has been reported that he is looking for new opportunities beyond Africa, with interest from clubs in Europe and Asia,” sources indicated.

Having overcome the frustration of unpaid salaries and the uncertainty of conflict in Lebanon, Omala will be hoping for more stability and success in Cambodia. Visakha FC are viewed as one of the country’s most ambitious clubs, with a track record of challenging for domestic honors and participating in regional competitions.
