Festus Chuma 17:30 - 11.02.2024

FC Talanta and Sofapaka FC battled it out at the Police Sacco Stadium, showcasing an intense match filled with attacking plays and crucial saves.

FC Talanta and Sofapaka FC shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw at the Police Sacco Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The draw saw Talanta remain in 13th spot, but they are now level on points with 14th-placed Sofapaka and 12th-placed Murang'a Seal after dropping points.

Talanta got the game off on a positive note and created several goal scoring opportunities during the first 10 minutes of the match. The likes of  Lucas Waitere and Agustine Kuta proved to be the attackers-in-chief for the home team, while Moses Asembeka and Paul Odhiambo struggled under the cosh.

Sofapala had their first shot in anger when Jacob Onyango  let fly with the left foot from just outside the penalty area in the 14th minute, but his effort skidded wide of the mark.

Talanta eventually took the lead in the 28th minute, with Augustine Kuta making a delivery into the area that was diverted into the back of the net by Edwin Lutta for an own goal.

Soon after going a goal down,  Sofapaka managed to get into the game with a sustained period of ball possession.

The Batoto ba Mungu continued to apply pressure and continuously made way down their left-hand flank. With Sofapaka playing under pressure, Talanta struggled to make the most of their attacking opportunities.

The visitors side attacked in sporadic moments toward the end of the first half, while the Talanta remained in control of the tie overall.

Nevertheless, with no notable goal scoring chances created in the closing stages of the half, the referee called time on the first 45 with Talanta holding a slender 1-0 lead.

Lous Masika was a whisker away from doubling their advantage eight minutes into the second half when he struck the left post from inside the area, while Sofapaka outfit nearly restored parity two minutes later as Victor Ougo pulled off a good save to deny Alex Juma from close range.

Kagan Ndemi then wasted the chance to equalise from a free-kick in the 61st minute as he planted his header wide from inside the six-yard box and Alex Juma  almost made Sofapka pay seven minutes later from a corner that he headed inches wide of the right post.

Within a minute, Ian Omondi  had rattled the sidebar with a strike from inside the area which saw Talanta denied by the frame of the goal for the third time in the match.

After patient play on the edge of the Talanta area, Sofapaka leveled matters in the 72nd minute as their pressure paid off late on in the tie. With the ball played out to Rodgers Kipkemoi  on the right wing, the full-back picked out  Jacob Onyango, whose powerful header went past the Talnata custodian to make it 1-1.

Time was running out for Alfred Tanui  and  Alex Juma  failed to test Victor Ougo with a header that he steered wide of the right post from an 80th-minute free-kick in what proved to be their final opportunity to get something from the game.

In what was an entertaining encounter at the Police Sacco Stadium, FC Talnata and Sofapaka shared the spoils in a 1-1 stalemate.
