Gor Mahia coach McKinstry supports striker Omala amid goal drought, highlighting his efforts and team's confidence despite a challenging period in the FKF Premier League.

Gor Mahia head coach Johnathan McKinstry has expressed his unwavering confidence in striker Benson Omala amidst a noticeable goal drought in the FKF Premier League.

Despite Omala's failure to score in the last five weeks, McKinstry's support for his forward remains steadfast, underscoring the player's significant contributions to the team's performance.

Omala, who has been stuck on nine goals, has seen his lead in the golden boot race diminish as competitors inch closer. Yet, the lack of goals has not dampened McKinstry's view of his striker's abilities.

Speaking to reporters following Saturday's goalless draw against Ulinzi Stars, which saw Gor Mahia drop points for the second consecutive game, the coach highlighted Omala's efforts against top goalkeepers such as Patrick Matasi and Brian Bwire.

"It is not like he has not been having goals but top goalkeepers like Patrick Matasi and Brian Bwire denied him against Tusker and Kenya Police. So long as he is making goalkeepers have a hectic time, we will keep telling him to force goalkeepers to work," McKinstry explained as per Nation.

The week leading up to the match was rife with speculation regarding Omala's potential move to Algeria, a transfer that ultimately fell through.

In an attempt to shield his player from the resulting media spotlight, McKinstry opted to start Omala on the bench against Ulinzi Stars.

"Benson is part of the group, and I was happy the way fans applauded him. It is sad he has not got that opportunity, but I hope it will come," McKinstry added, emphasising the collective support within the team and from the fans.

Omala's last goal came on December 9, during a penalty that helped Gor Mahia salvage a draw against Nzoia Sugar after being two goals down.

His quest for the golden boot sees him up against formidable opponents such as Tito Okelo, Francis Kahiro, Boniface Muchiri, Eric Kapaito, and Vincent Owino.

This is not the first time Omala has experienced a dry spell in front of the goal.

Last season, he went five matches without scoring before finding the net in the final game of the season. His goal was crucial in securing a 4-1 victory over Nairobi City Stars, which clinched Gor Mahia's 20th league title.
