Musa Mohammed has shed light on why Gor Mahia is key to Harambee Stars selection and moves abroad.

"I do so much," Mohammed said when asked whether he still harbours hopes of returning to Harambee Stars.

"There is no footballer who does not want that for themselves as long as they are still active. Most players – their biggest aim is to represent the country. It is all about the day you put on that jersey and hear the national anthem. It is a very good feeling."

The veteran defender was once a cornerstone of both Gor Mahia and the national team, leading Kenya with distinction and bringing stability to the backline.

His leadership and experience remain valuable assets, but his path back to the national team is now more uncertain than ever.

Coach Benni McCarthy’s New Era Could Offer Fresh Hope

If Musa Mohammed is to make a return to the Harambee Stars setup, he will have to convince current head coach Benni McCarthy, who is keen to assemble a dynamic and competitive squad for the delayed 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

The tournament, which will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania this August, is seen as a platform for local-based talent to shine.

McCarthy’s focus appears to be on rebuilding with younger, in-form players to reinvigorate the squad’s fortunes.

This poses a significant challenge for sidelined veterans like Musa, who must prove they still have what it takes both physically and tactically to contribute at the highest level.

However, one major obstacle standing in Musa’s way is his lack of consistent playing time at the club level.

Without regular match fitness and visibility, his case becomes harder to make in a competitive field of emerging defenders.

Despite these hurdles, Mohammed remains hopeful even as he navigates the uncertainties of a career that once soared to the heights of continental football.
