Sammy Obingo: Burial Date Set for Former FKF Secretary General as Football Fraternity Mourns

Former FKF Secretary General Sammy Obingo to be laid to rest in Mumias today as football community pays tribute.

Former Football Kenya Federation (formerly Kenya Football Federation) Secretary General Sammy Joel Obingo will be laid to rest today, April 26, 2025, at his rural home in Eshitukhumi village, Mumias.

The veteran football administrator passed away earlier this month following a tragic motorcycle incident.

Obingo, 68, died on Tuesday, April 8, at 5:30 pm at the Mumias Level 4 Hospital.

According to the family, he fell off a motorcycle just 300 meters from his home after attending a ground-breaking ceremony for classroom construction at Mumias Township Primary School, where he served as the chairperson.

“He recovered and was jovial even before the day of the groundbreaking meeting,” said family spokesperson Abnery Aswani, referring to Obingo’s earlier medical condition as per Standard.

The former FKF official had been diagnosed with intestinal obstruction last year and underwent surgery at LifeCare Hospital in Bungoma.

The late Obingo’s body has been lying at St. Mary’s Hospital Mortuary in Mumias, where mourners and sports stakeholders have been trooping in to pay their respects ahead of the burial.

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) paid glowing tribute to the late Obingo, hailing his decades of service in shaping the game in Kenya.

“As we reflect on his invaluable service to Kenyan football, our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones during this difficult time,” the federation posted in their official condolence message.

Obingo, who served as Secretary General during the era when the football governing body was still referred to as Kenya Football Federation (KFF).

Community members in Eshitukhumi, friends, and former colleagues have described him as a “pillar of leadership” both in the football world and in local community development.

The burial ceremony is expected to draw hundreds of mourners, including FKF officials, local leaders, and football fans, in a final show of respect.
