Mikel Arteta Reacts to Shock FA Cup Exit as He Sends Clear Message to Arsenal Players
Following a disappointing FA Cup quarter-final exit, manager Mikel Arteta has called on his team to demonstrate their true character as they shift their focus to crucial upcoming fixtures in the Champions League and Premier League.
The team was defeated 2-1 by Southampton at St Mary's Stadium, with goals from Ross Stewart and Shea Charles securing the win for the Saints. Viktor Gyokeres scored the lone goal for the visitors.
With a Champions League quarter-final first leg against Sporting CP on the horizon, Arteta emphasised the need for a strong response during the final two months of the season.
Mikel Arteta: We Are Very Disappointed
"We have the most important period in both competitions ahead of us," he told the club’s media. "It's now, when you have a difficult moment in the season, that you have to show what we are made of, and it is now we have to show who we are."
Arteta expressed his disappointment at failing to secure a return to Wembley but gave credit to the victorious Southampton side.
"Obviously, we're very disappointed. We wanted to get back to Wembley as quickly as possible, and we haven't managed to do that, so first of all, congratulations to Southampton for being there," he said.
Reflecting on the match, the manager pointed to missed opportunities and uncharacteristic defensive lapses as key factors in the defeat.
"The game had moments where we had a lot of dominance from our side, and chances, and situations in and around the box that we didn't capitalise on enough," Arteta explained.
"And then we have to accept we were poor in and around our box defending situations that normally we are excellent at. We paid the price."
The decisive goal came late in the match, with Charles scoring for the Saints in the 85th minute of a contest that saw opportunities at both ends.
Mikel Arteta acknowledged that his team must improve their effectiveness in both penalty areas. "100 per cent [we have to do better in both boxes], and that's what you have to do well. If you don't, you put yourself in a really difficult position against a good team on a good run."
Finally, he paid tribute to the travelling supporters, expressing regret that the team could not deliver a victory for them.
"We're very sad because we want to give them joy and give them back what they showed again tonight. Unfortunately, we couldn't do that; we tried until the last seconds. But there are certain things you have to do in football if you want to win," he said.
