PSG vs Atletico Madrid Match Preview
)
PSG and Atletico are heavily favored to advance from a group also containing Brazilian side Botafogo and MLS club Seattle Sounders. However, one, or even both, could drop points in this opening fixture.
This is the first Club World Cup appearance for both teams. PSG, fresh off their Champions League victory, would have participated in the former format of the tournament (the Intercontinental Cup) later this year. Instead, Luis Enrique's side will compete in the rebranded Intercontinental Cup in December.
This summer's expanded tournament presents a greater challenge, requiring seven victories to claim the title. PSG enter the competition with immense confidence after a dominant season. They won Ligue 1 by a 19-point margin, secured another Coupe de France title, and triumphed 5-0 over Inter Milan in the Champions League final.
PSG's attacking prowess was on full display throughout the season, scoring a remarkable 152 goals. However, their defensive record has been less impressive, with only three clean sheets in their last 12 matches.
PSG vs Atletico Madrid Head-to-Head Record
)
The French giants’ previous encounter with Atletico Madrid in the Champions League group stage saw the Spanish side snatch a late 1-0 victory at the Parc des Princes, courtesy of an Angel Correa goal in the 93rd minute. This despite PSG dominating possession and outshooting Atletico 22-4.
Following that match, the two teams' fortunes diverged. Atletico finished a distant third in La Liga and failed to make a significant impact in the Champions League or Copa del Rey. While they won six of their last nine matches, scoring 19 goals in their final five victories, these games held little significance after their Copa del Rey semi-final exit in April.
Although this is their Club World Cup debut, Atletico have prior experience in a similar competition. As European Cup runners-up in 1974 (Bayern Munich declined to participate), they defeated Independiente 2-1 on aggregate to win the Intercontinental Cup.
PSG vs Atletico Madrid Team News
)
Both managers have named strong squads, with few injury concerns. Ousmane Dembele is PSG's only major doubt after withdrawing from the French national team. Bradley Barcola and Gonçalo Ramos are vying for Dembele's spot, while Desire Doue is expected to start after his impressive performance in the Champions League final.
Atletico Madrid are expected to have a full-strength squad. Goalkeeper Jan Oblak has joined the squad after featuring for Slovenia, and several players, including Nahuel Molina, Rodrigo De Paul, and Julian Alvarez, were involved in international matches. Alexander Sorloth, despite a hat-trick in Atletico's final La Liga game, is likely to start on the bench.
