Former Harambee Stars interim coach Francis Kimanzi takes up another integral role within Kenyan football.

Former Harambee Stars interim coach Francis Kimanzi has taken up a key role within Kenyan football following his appointment as Football Development Director.

This move comes after his tenure as interim coach, a position he assumed after the departure of Engin Firat and was later succeeded by newly appointed South African football legend Benni McCarthy.

Kimanzi has played a crucial role in helping McCarthy transition smoothly into his new position, given the short turnaround time before his first major assignment of leading Kenya in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Gambia on March 20 and Gabon on March 23.

His familiarity with the squad and the local football scene has been instrumental in ensuring a seamless change in leadership.

In a statement seen by Pulse Sports, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) reaffirmed its faith in Kimanzi’s ability to contribute meaningfully in his new capacity.

"Mr. Kimanzi, a highly experienced coach with an extensive background in Kenyan football, steps into this role as the federation seeks to strengthen its structures, nurture local talent, and foster sustainable growth within the sport," the FKF statement read partly.

FKF General Secretary Harold Ndege echoed similar sentiments, emphasising Kimanzi’s significance in shaping the future of Kenyan football.

"We are confident that Mr. Kimanzi's leadership and expertise will play a pivotal role in advancing our development agenda and shaping the future of Kenyan football," said Ndege.

Kimanzi’s appointment comes at a time when Kenyan football is striving for progress both on and off the pitch.

Having guided Kenya to its highest-ever FIFA ranking of 68, Kimanzi's deep understanding of the local football ecosystem makes him a fitting choice to spearhead development initiatives.

Additionally, McCarthy acknowledged Kimanzi’s role in easing his transition, highlighting the former coach’s in-depth knowledge of the national team setup and the Kenyan football landscape.

With this appointment, Kimanzi is now tasked with fostering grassroots football, improving the national team’s structures, and ensuring a sustainable talent pipeline for future generations.

His impact will be closely watched as Kenya seeks to re-establish itself as a football powerhouse in the region.
