CAF president Patrice Motsepe has warned the Minister of Sports in South Africa against meddling in the affairs of the country’s football association.

CAF president Patrice Motsepe has sent a firm warning to South Africa’s Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie over what he deems to be government interference in the country’s football.

McKenzie has been calling for reforms at the South African Football Association (SAFA) hitting out at its president Danny Jordaan for the way he runs things.

Jordaan has also come under fire for mismanagement of resources while he has a court case over corruption-related allegations.

Among the things McKenzie has been pushing for is the need for prudent spending, welfare of national teams while he recently sent a letter to FIFA informing them that he has asked SAFA to withdraw their appeal over the three-point deduction imposed on Bafana Bafana for the fielding of an ineligible player in their World Cup qualifier.

This latest letter is what has drawn the ire of Motsepe, who feels while McKenzie means well, he may be overstepping his mandate.

What Has Motsepe Told McKenzie?

“All countries on the continent, there is a clear understanding of the role and partnerships with governments and the sovereignty of every nation. Football does not interfere with those sovereign matters of every country,” Motsepe told South African media as quoted by Afrik-Foot ZA.

“The issue that relates to football is that governments should not interfere, so I would imagine what the minister of Sport in South Africa is communicating with FIFA will be within strict parameters.

“If there are any issues, I am confident there will be discussions to make sure that those parameters are respected,” he concluded.

McKenzie has maintained his onslaught on SAFA and he is also on record saying that whoever was responsible for the FIFA sanctions imposed on Bafana Bafana must be punished even after Jordaan said the matter is closed, now that South Africa sealed their 2026 World Cup ticket.
