The sprint sensation has revealed how they clinched the World Athletics Championships relay gold under challenging circumstances.

Sprint sensation Noah Lyles has revealed he practiced barton hand-offs with Brandon Carnes just once before Team USA stormed to victory in the 4 x 100 meters relay final at the World Athletics Championships held in Budapest in August.

The US men's sprinters had a comfortable lead almost the entire race around the track.

Italy claimed the silver, running a season-best time of 37.62. Team Jamaica ran a 37.76 to round out the top three.

The relay title was his third gold medal at the 2023 worlds. He won the 100 meters in 9.83 and won his third consecutive world championship in the 200 with a winning time of 19.52.

However, the relay victory, which was an icing on his cake, was almost virtually impromptu considering one of the team’s members withdrew due to injury before the race

“We did one hand-off ‘cause the person I was practising with at relay camp got hurt before going into the race,” Lyles said.

“It was all just a thought that he might not be able to run the relay, so when we came to it, Brandon is who we replaced him with. I had never done a hand-off with Brandon, and Brandon was practising the fourth leg when I wasn’t in the race.

“So we went to the bat on the last day and I did (just) one hand-off with Brandon and that was it ‘cause Fred (Kerley) said he wanted to do a handoff with Brandon and it left Brandon tired, so we only got one hand-off together and I was like, ‘it is what it is’, I’m either gonna get it or I am not’.

Lyles ran the second leg during the 2022 edition of the championships in Orgeon, but finished as the anchor this time round.

The 26-year old has revealed that the team strategically decided to put him as the anchor in 2023 because of his table-topping speed that would get them out of trouble no matter the situation they found themselves in.

“Technically, the second leg runs the most amount of meters and I ran the second leg last year (in Oregon), but we learned very quickly that you need to finish strong I have the highest top speed and I am the 200m champion, like, you are not going to find somebody who can have tire topper than me and can hold on.

“So it does not matter where you are in the race, I’m going to hawk you down or I am going to open up a gap.”
