Nairobi United coach Nicholas Muyoti has revealed why his charges will shock Gor Mahia in the final of the FKF Cup this Sunday.

Nairobi United head coach Nicholas Muyoti is backing his side to cause a major upset when they take on 20-time FKF Premier League champions Gor Mahia in the final of the FKF Cup this Sunday at Ulinzi Sports Complex.

Nairobi United have shocked many by reaching the domestic cup final, considering they have never even played in the FKF Premier League before.

Coincidentally, they eliminated several Kenya Premier League sides along the way and now stand on the brink of continental football.

“The boys have been crying for the trophy, and if they want it, I will give them the freedom to,” Muyoti told Pulse Sports in an exclusive interview.

“To even get to the final is commendable because we faced many KPL clubs and still got here with God’s grace. Now they want to win it because they see it as a good chance to be recognised as players in the Confederation Cup.”

Nairobi United’s rise has been swift but not without its challenges. After securing promotion from the National Super League earlier this year, expectations were tempered. Yet the club’s professionalism, tactical discipline, and faith in youth have seen them defy the odds to compete with Kenya’s football elite.

Muyoti, a former international midfielder with a growing reputation as one of the country’s most tactically astute managers, joined the club with one vision in mind: to build a team that could challenge on all fronts.

“This team was determined to win promotion. When they approached me, I agreed,” he said. “Looking at how my players were like, we deserve to be champions.”

However, success hasn’t come without obstacles. After clinching promotion, Muyoti admitted the players took their foot off the gas, mentally switching off, something he attributes to a lack of professionalism born from inexperience.

“It has not been smooth all the way. It has been psychological,” he explained.

“The players got complacent after winning the league. That is not professionalism and that is something we seriously need to rectify moving forward if we want to make this team a force to reckon with.”

Standing in their way is Kenyan football royalty — Gor Mahia — a side stacked with experience, pedigree, and a passionate fanbase that expects silverware. While many will consider the match a foregone conclusion, Muyoti is not fazed.

Instead, he’s urging his players to embrace the moment, trust in their journey, and seize the opportunity to write history.

A win would not only hand the club its first major domestic title but also book them a spot in next season’s CAF Confederation Cup — a huge milestone for a team that was in the third tier back in 2023.

“Now they want to win it because they see it as a good chance to be recognised as players in the Confederation Cup,” Muyoti reiterated.

Victory on Sunday  would validate Nairobi United’s rapid rise, showcase the club’s ambition, and open doors for players to gain exposure on the continental stage.

For Muyoti, who led the side to the National Super League title to win promotion to the top flight of Kenyan football for next season,  it is about belief, mentality, and unlocking the hunger within his youthful squad.

“If they really want the trophy, I’ll give them the freedom to go for it,” he said, smiling. “Now it’s in their hands.”

Kick-off is scheduled for 3:00 PM EAT at the Ulinzi Sports Complex. A sold-out crowd is expected, with neutrals across the country eager to see if David can indeed topple Goliath.
