Nairobi County has allocated KSh 800 million for the revamping of City Stadium, now renamed Joe Kadenge Stadium.

Nairobi County Governor Johnson Sakaja has made a monumental announcement that promises to immortalize Kenyan football legend Joe Kadenge in the hearts and minds of sports enthusiasts nationwide.

In a move mirroring the honor given to Thierry Henry at the Emirates Stadium, Sakaja revealed plans to erect a statue of Kadenge outside the newly renamed Joe Kadenge Stadium, formerly known as City Stadium.

Joe Kadenge, whose illustrious career left an indelible mark on Kenyan football, passed away in July 2019 at the age of 84, while undergoing treatment in Nairobi.

His legacy, characterized by dazzling skill on the pitch and an unwavering passion for the game, has lived on, inspiring generations of footballers and fans alike.

In a heartfelt tribute to Kadenge, Governor Sakaja underscored the importance of recognizing and celebrating the contributions of sports heroes and heroines.

"We are revamping Joe Kadenge Stadium, formerly known as City Stadium. We are going to have a statue of Joe Kadenge, one of our greatest heroes, just like Thierry Henry at Emirates Stadium, outside the stadium," Sakaja said.

He further highlighted the county's commitment to the project, with an initial budget of 800 million allocated for the stadium's reconstruction.

The governor also expressed hope for additional government funding to enhance the stadium's facilities even further.

The ambitious renovation plan for Joe Kadenge Stadium includes the installation of a FIFA-standard playing pitch, a running track, and stands capable of accommodating 10,000 spectators.

The decision to renovate the stadium comes at a crucial time, as Kenya prepares for the close of Nyayo Stadium for renovations in anticipation of hosting the 2027 African Cup of Nations.

The revamped stadium will not only honor Kadenge's legacy but also ensure that Nairobi remains at the forefront of sporting excellence in the region.

Joe Kadenge Stadium has long been the heart of Kenyan football, hosting countless memorable matches and serving as the home ground for Gor Mahia, Kenya's most successful football club.

Legends such as Allan Thigo, Peter Dawo, and Austin Oduor have graced its pitch, contributing to the rich history and tradition of Kenyan football.
