After his Roma side dropped to 16th on the table, Mourinho was defensive about recording the Gialorossi's worst ever start to a Serie A season

Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho offered a bizarre response when he was asked about his Roma team’s recent poor spell after their loss to Bologna in Serie A. 

Roma succumb to third loss in six games

The Gialorossi succumbed to their third loss of the new season already, and Mourinho appeared not to be in the mood to take too much criticism of his team’s performances, especially considering the number of injuries they have suffered. 

After conceding 11 goals in the first six games of the 2023/24 season and the former European Champion noted that his team was scant thanks to injuries, saying, “We lost Chris Smalling, you can see how many games we won without Chris. When we are missing those players, we lack solidity.

“However, to say we lost the solidity because we are missing this or that player is not fair either. Solidity is also the consequence of team spirit and collective work to track back. We have lost some of that.”

Mourinho defensive about Roma record

Mourinho was also notified that Roma’s current form of one win and three losses in the opening six games of the season was the worst in Gialorossi's history, and the former Manchester United manager became defensive and mentioned his achievements with the Italian side.

When quizzed about the unwanted record, Mourinho replied, “It is the worst of my career too. However, I also think it is the first time that Roma have played two European Finals in a row.”

Finally, Mourinho was asked about the current state of the squad and if the team required more quality, and he replied, “It is the squad we have and with this squad, we must emerge from this situation. There is no more transfer window, nobody can leave or arrive, this is the group we have with its qualities and its problems.

“We have no time to cry. We can cry internally, because it hurts our heart, especially for me because of my rapport with the Roma fans. But tomorrow we will be back at work. The next game is worth three points, not seven or eight, but it becomes a very, very important match for us.”

Roma’s poor start to the season has seen them drop to 16th on the table, three points away from the bottom of Serie A.
