Makwatta at the double for Kariobangi Sharks as Tusker fail to close in on Gor Mahia

Red-hot Makwatta scored a brace in a thrilling FKF Premier League match between Kariobangi Sharks and Tusker FC.

Kariobangi Sharks claimed a thrilling 3-2 win over Tusker FC in an FKF Premier League match played on Saturday, April 6, at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos.

Despite the win, Sharks remain 12th on the table, while Tusker also stayed stagnant in second place, seven points behind Gor Mahia, who face Kakamega Homeboyz a later match on Saturday.

Tusker, the home team got the game off to a positive start, with Fortune Omotto producing the first shot at goal inside the first ten minutes. 

Sharks continued to see more of the ball during the opening stages of the game, while Tusker looked to hit the hosts on the break.

Not holding back, Tusker produced a couple of goal-scoring opportunities of their own early on, as Erick Kapaito probed on the edge of Shark’s 18-yard area.

Sharks began finding their attacking rhythm en-route to the 15th minute mark, with Izaak Otieno joining in on the fun with a right-footed shot from outside the area which went narrowly wide.

The Slum Boys broke the deadlock in the 21st minute, following a swift move in transition as John Makwatta sent a powerful shot past Brian Opondo to make it 1-0.

Ten minutes later, Tusker were forced to make an enforced change after captain Mike Kibwage limped out injured and was replaced by James Kibande.

Sharks continued to find success going forward however, Tusker managed to get an equalizer at the stroke of halftime when substitute Kibande laid in a cross from the left which was blocked by the Kariobangi Sharks' defense, but Dennis Oguta picked up the ball and shot low into the net.

Tusker held most of the ball after the restart and actively began searching for the lead.

John Njuguna looked lively during the opening stages of the second half and put the Sharks' defence on high alert following an attempt at goal in the 49th minute.

However, Sharks were able to take the lead in the 56th minute when Makwatta placed the ball into the back of the net for his second goal of the match.

The Slum Boys continued to dominate on the ball but battled to breach the Brewers defense as the likes of Stanely Wilson and Biron Otieno tried their luck from distance.

Tusker proved to be a tough nut to crack for a third goal as the clock began to wind down, with the Brewers often taking the direct approach in search of an equalizer.

Robert Matano's coached side managed to draw level in the 73rd-minute courtesy of Ojok Deogratious after the Slum Boys' defense was exposed.

However, Kariobangi Sharks reclaimed the lead with ten minutes remaining until the end of the match, courtesy of Julius Masaba, to make it 3-2 in favor of the hosts.
