Liverpool are bidding to sign Alexander Isak for a mammoth 110 million pounds plus add-ons, despite having already signed a similar-ilk forward in Hugo Ekitike for over 80 million pounds.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has publicly questioned the club’s transfer strategy, calling it "chaotic" as reports link the Reds with a big-money move for Alexander Isak, just days after spending a massive €95 million to sign Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt.

Despite Ekitike being a natural center-forward, Liverpool are reportedly pursuing Newcastle United's Isak—a striker who plays in the same position—for an even higher fee.

“Isak would be an excellent signing,” Carragher said during an appearance on The Overlap.

“But from a fan’s perspective, I don’t want Liverpool spending £150 million on Isak. It’s strange that we’ve just bought a striker and are now going after another, even more expensive one. It doesn’t seem well thought out.”

Carragher: ‘£80 million is too much for a backup!’

While some argue that Ekitike offers versatility and could be used on the wing, Carragher isn’t convinced.

“£80 million is too much for a backup! Where is Ekitike supposed to get minutes in his natural position? Arne Slot will be forced to play him somewhere on the left,” he added.

On X (formerly Twitter), Carragher drew comparisons to other elite clubs struggling with similar squad dilemmas.

“When you have a top striker like Isak, Haaland, or Kane, it’s hard to have a strong backup. Spurs never had a replacement for Kane, and City had to let [Julián] Álvarez go because Pep couldn’t keep him happy.”

Carragher also took a swipe at Isak’s camp for the timing of the potential move.

“Why didn’t he or his agent tell Newcastle a few months ago that he wanted to leave? It all seems a bit chaotic now.”

With Liverpool already shelling out nearly €100 million on Ekitike, fans and pundits alike are raising eyebrows over the possibility of spending another record fee on a player in the same role.

For Carragher, it’s less about the talent of Isak—and more about the logic behind the club's recruitment decisions.
