The 22-year-old has scored 51 goals in all competitions so far this season. Solskjaer says he urged United to sign the PWA player of the year before he took charge at Old Trafford in 2018.

Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has claimed he told the club to sign Erling Haaland for just £4million but they “didn’t listen”.

The Norwegian played under Solskjaer at Molde five years ago, with the record-breaking striker going on to join Red Bull Salzburg and then Borussia Dortmund, before sealing a £51m move to Manchester City in April 2022.

The 22-year-old has scored 51 goals in all competitions so far this season. Solskjaer says he urged United to sign the PWA player of the year before he took charge at Old Trafford in 2018.

“I got in contact with United because we had this talented striker who they should have had,” the former United boss said, speaking at ‘An Evening with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’ event in Manchester.

“But they didn’t listen, unfortunately. Four million, I asked for. But they never signed him. Four million! Don’t ask (where he is now). He’s too good…”

Haaland broke the single-season Premier League goalscoring record earlier this month.

He netted his 35th goal of a prolific and unprecedented first season in English football with his strike against West Ham United in a 3-0 win.

That goal moved him clear of joint-record holders Alan Shearer and Andy Cole into first place on his own with four games of the season still to play.

City travel to Everton on Sunday looking to cement their place at the top of the table.
