Ryan Ogam completed his move to Austrian outfit Wolfsberger AC in the Austrian Bundesliga following his heroics for Harambee Stars at CHAN 2024 and the recent September World Cup qualifiers.

Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy has offered Ryan Ogam timely advice as the 20-year-old striker embarks on the next chapter of his career, signing for Austrian Bundesliga side Wolfsberger AC after a breakout year in Kenyan football.

Ogam’s rise has been nothing short of remarkable. After signing for Tusker from the now-defunct Rainbow FC in August 2024 following a short stint in Dubai. the forward netted 15 goals in 17 FKF Premier League games before an unfortunate injury cut his domestic season short in March.

Determined to return, he worked his way back to fitness just in time for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), where he showcased his versatility—leading the line as a striker while also slotting in on the wing against DR Congo.

He has since announced himself on the international stage, scoring on his full debut against Gambia earlier this month before grabbing a brace in Kenya’s 5-0 rout of Seychelles.

McCarthy’s Advice: “Don’t Get Comfortable”

Speaking after the Seychelles win, McCarthy praised Ogam’s rapid impact but urged him to avoid complacency.

“To make an impact on the international stage like that—it’s really good,” McCarthy said. “From playing in the Kenyan league, then moving to CHAN, and now taking his quality to the international stage in just two or three games, it’s very pleasing to see. I’m really happy with the progress he’s making.”

McCarthy added that Ogam now has the perfect mentor in Michael Olunga, with whom he has already struck up a promising partnership.

“In due time, he just needs to keep himself in and around the setup because I think he has the best person to learn from,” the coach explained. “When you have Michael Olunga still playing for the national team, there’s no better guy to teach you. What Olunga has done for the country is remarkable, and to still be performing at this level is incredible.

“For young players, it’s great to have such a mentor as the captain. You can already see Ryan quickly taking notes, learning what he needs to, and when he goes onto the pitch he’s starting to become his own man. That’s great—that’s exactly what Kenyan football needs.”

Ogam's Life-changing Wolfsberger move

Ogam joins Wolfsberger AC, a club with a reputation for developing young players and giving them opportunities in Austria’s top tier. WAC, as they’re known, have previously competed in the UEFA Europa League and are viewed as a springboard for African talent hoping to move into bigger European leagues.

His transfer comes at a time when Kenyan footballers are increasingly testing themselves abroad. Joseph Okumu has established himself in Ligue 1 with Reims after moving to Sweden following the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

Erick ‘Marcelo’ Ouma is also another player that has done well after stints in Georgia and Sweden before landing a move to Polish giants Rakow.

Ogam’s move to Austria represents another step in that trend, raising hopes that Kenya’s next generation is beginning to find pathways into Europe’s competitive setups.
