Gyan, who in June 2023 announced his retirement from football after a glittering 16-year football career featuring for several clubs worldwide, says the African Football League concept is one the continent should embrace.

Ghanaian and African football legend Asamoah Gyan has thrown his weight behind the newly created African Football League.

Gyan, who in June 2023 announced his retirement from football after a glittering 16-year football career featuring for several clubs worldwide, says the African Football League concept is one the continent should embrace.

"I think it's the right time for Africa to shine; that's what everybody is expecting, like in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, we had an African team reach the semifinals, which we as Africans are proud of," Gyan told CAF Media.

"It's a very important competition for African Football because it will boost the local players out there; it's a different level because it's about champions who are ready to battle each other."

"This is a huge football project for Africa; I am happy to be a part of it. We're here to boost everybody's confidence; whatever we say to the young generation will boost them,” Gyan added.

Ghana's all-time goal scorer also backed African giants Al Ahly as favourites in the competition, basing it on the Egyptian giants' record in the recent past as he rallied fans to enjoy the showpiece.

"Everyone is here to win the African Football League on paper. Al Ahly is a strong team; they have dominated in recent years. For now, they look stronger, but you never know other teams can surprise you.”

"My message is to prove they can compete on the top level; fans should tune in; it's a huge tourney,” Gyan noted.

The inaugural African Football League season will get underway from 20th October to 11th November 2023 on a home-and-away basis.

The top 8 famous and successful teams from the 3 African regional blocks will face off with Simba facing Al Ahly, TP Mazembe meeting Esperance, Enyimba taking on Wydad, and Sundowns facing Petro de Luanda
