Manchester United have reportedly decided to go for a German-based striker after Sporting’s in-demand Viktor Gyokeres expressed a desire to sign for Arsenal.

Following reports that Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres favours a move to Arsenal, Manchester United have turned their attention to alternatives.

Reports indicate that United have intensified their efforts to sign Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike. Recent weeks have seen the 22-year-old linked with a move away from the Bundesliga club, and United appear to be leading the charge.

According to French publication Footmercato, discussions with Ekitike's representatives have accelerated over the past two days.

Manchester United have also contacted Frankfurt to inquire about the striker's potential transfer fee. While Ekitike has been previously valued at €100 million, it remains to be seen what fee, if any, can be agreed upon.

Competition for Ekitike's signature is fierce, with both Chelsea and Liverpool reportedly monitoring the situation. The young forward impressed last season, scoring 22 goals and providing 12 assists across all competitions. His performances have earned him the label of a "special" player, and many believe he has the potential to become a top-class Premier League striker.

United's current striking options, Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee, have struggled to consistently deliver and the club recognises the need for a significant upgrade in attacking firepower if they hope to return to the Champions League and challenge for major trophies.

Ekitike is seen as a player who could provide that spark, and Old Trafford is viewed as an environment where his development could flourish.

Sources suggest that United's interest in Ekitike is not new, with initial contact made back in 2022 before his move to Paris Saint-Germain.

Following his subsequent transfer to Frankfurt, United have reignited their pursuit. The Athletic’s David Ornstein recently reported discussions between United and the player's representatives, and now it appears contact has been made with Frankfurt.

Ekitike is currently under contract with Frankfurt until 2029, with Transfermarkt valuing him at £17 million. However, there are suggestions that United might be able to secure his services for a slightly lower fee.
