Nairobi City Stars' key forward has returned to training after illness boosting the team's morale ahead of their critical match against Gor Mahia.

For Gor Mahia, the upcoming 22nd round of the FKF Premier League match against Nairobi City Stars at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos on Saturday, 17 February 2024, now carries an added layer of challenge.

City Stars' formidable forward Kelvin Etemesi has made a timely return to training marking his first appearance on the pitch in seven weeks after a serious illness sidelined him since December.

Etemesi's comeback not only boosts City Stars' attacking options but also signals potential trouble for Gor Mahia's defense.

Etemesi, who last featured for City Stars in their historic 1-0 victory over Kakamega Homeboyz in December has been eagerly anticipated by both fans and teammates alike.

"I have been out for a while but it has been my wish to link up with my teammates. I am now back and keen to catch up and return to the field once again,” said Etemesi.

Despite the setback, Etemesi's ambitions remain high. "I want to score goals so that I can reduce the gap with the current top scorer. The league is tough, but I believe with the current form of City Stars, it’s just a matter of time before I get to the top," he added.

Nicholas Muyoti, the head coach of City Stars, expressed his enthusiasm about having Etemesi back in the fold.

"It’s good to have him back after that illness that took a heavy toll on him. Now he can slowly start his journey back. We will lend him our hand and give him ample time to get back to full fitness," Muyoti said, indicating a cautious approach to Etemesi's reintegration into the team.

Etemesi's track record speaks for itself. As the top scorer for Simba wa Nairobi last season with 12 goals, including ten from a record five braces, his impact on the field is undeniable.

Before his illness, Etemesi had already notched three goals and as many assists, along with one key pass in 14 appearances, accumulating 841 regular-time minutes.

The return of such a key player for City Stars undoubtedly adds an extra layer of complexity for Gor Mahia as they prepare for the clash.

With City Stars hosting the game, the home advantage and Etemesi's potential participation could tilt the scales in favor of the Nairobi-based team.
