Harambee Stars defender Joseph Okumu joined his Reims team-mates as the French club started preparations for their busy 2024 programme following an impressive end to the year

Harambee Stars defender Joseph Okumu has returned to training with his club Stade de Reims following the Christmas break as his side seek to continue their good run in 2024.

Reims ended 2023 on a high when they beat Le Havre in Ligue 1 on December 20 before the French division took a break but Okumu and his team-mates returned to work on Saturday ahead of their next match on January 6.

The club will take on fourth division club Dinan Lehon in the French Cup Round of 64 next Saturday before they resume league duty away to third-placed Monaco on January 13.

Reims had a strong first half of the season which ended with Will Still’s men in eighth position on 26 points after winning eight, drawing two and losing seven of their 17 matches and will be hoping to build onto it as they push to qualify for European football.

Okumu has been among key players for Reims and was named among the Ligue 1 team of the month for October as well as the team of the week before the Christmas break.

The Kenyan centre-back has excelled in defence for Reims since joining then from Belgian side KAA Gent in the summer.

His calmness, ball-playing ability and aerial strength have proved pivotal for his side who have alternated between a three-man defence and a back four.

Okumu has started 12 matches, while coming off the bench once for Reims this season, and will be keen to keep his place in the starting XI in 2024.
