CHAN 2024: Sports CS Explains Why There Is No Hype Less Than A Month to Tournament Kick Off

The government has explained why there has been no campaigns aimed at popularising the CHAN 2024 tournament.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya has provided an update regarding the lack of marketing campaigns aimed at popularising the 2024 African Nations Championships (CHAN 2024).

Kenya, alongside Uganda and Tanzania, are set to co-host the delayed tournament, reserved for players featuring in their local leagues, but there has been little hype around it.

Besides constant updates over the construction of key infrastructure, such as stadiums and training facilities, little has been said about ticketing where there are no signs or billboards promoting CHAN 2024, to the concern of some observers.

However, Mvurya says the delay has been occasioned by the fact that the Local Organising Committee (LOC) is limited in its mandate and can only roll out such campaigns once approved by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), who are the owners of the tournament.

“Hosting CHAN also has agreements with CAF. There are certain responsibilities that CAF does and certain responsibilities that LOC does,” Mvurya told the media on Thursday.

“In the last three weeks, the LOC had started to do billboards, they did one or two but it was realised it was not part of the agreement and they had to pull them down.”

The Sports CS expects everything to roll in motion from next week as the LOC and CAF have now shared responsibilities over CHAN 2024.

“From next week, we have discussed with CAF, there are certain responsibilities including signage that they will come to do,” Mvurya further said.

When Kenyans Expect Tournament Hype?

“But equally, the local organising committee has also agreed and identified key areas of intervention, including the kind of publicity they can do, and I am sure they will be rolling out some of these from next week at their level as CAF does marketing as the sponsoring agency for this tournament.

“I am aware there has been that concern but we have been sticking to the agreement but I am sure from next week, since they have agreed on responsibilities there will be much more activities as part of the prelude to CHAN.”

Kenya is playing host to the tournament for the first time and there is hope that it will stage a successful event.
