Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy has strongly defended his squad selection for the CHAN 2024 tournament following criticism levelled at him.

Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy has defended his squad selection for the 2024 African Nations Championships (CHAN 2024).

McCarthy names his provisional team for the tournament set to kick off on August 2 with Kenya in a tough Group A that also has Morocco, DR Congo, Angola and Zambia.

However, there were some names that raised eyebrows in the squad as a number of them have just returned from injury or still recovering while others, who had a great season, missed out.

The South African coach has, however, stood firm with his selection, saying he picked a team he feels will do the job and not to please the public.

Benni Not Keen on Pleasing People

“You cannot please everyone and I am not here to please people, I am here to bring success to this country and the players that we have selected are the players that we have seen,” McCarthy told the media on Thursday.

“The players that I have had in camp and there were just unfortunate when you go to play World Cup qualifiers, international players come you cannot select everyone. So, now it is based on local camp and those are the players you have seen and you see the qualities where they can take the national team.

“So, do you risk taking someone based on a couple of good games or knowing what you are going to have when you have seen players and that is how we select them,” he added.

McCarthy Defends His Choice of Players

McCarthy says he is experienced enough to know a good player and has strong faith in his selection for the CHAN 2024 tournament which he will be under pressure to perform well in.

“We know everyone is not going to be happy with how the team is selected but everyone has not been where I have been so I know talent when I see one but the players we picked were by far the players I think and technical team think can take this team,” said the former Manchester United first-team coach.

“We are not going to just participate in the CHAN, we are here to make a statement, to go as far as possible and hopefully win the tournament, and the boys that you see there are the ones I think have the capabilities of taking this team where we should be.”

The former Ajax Amsterdam, FC Porto and Blackburn Rovers striker is relying on only local players as the CHAN tournament is reserved for players plying their trade in their country’s leagues.
