The CHAN 2024 Local Organising Comittee chairman Nicholas Musonye has clarified why some fans were 'locked out' of Kasarani Stadium during Harambee Stars' opening clash against DR Congo last Sunday.

The Kenyan African Nations Championships (CHAN) Local Organizing Committee (LOC) Chairman Nicholas Musonye has responded to concerns over ticketing frustrations experienced by fans during Harambee Stars’ 1-0 victory over DR Congo in their CHAN 2024 opener at Kasarani Stadium.

Football fans stormed into Kasarani Stadium on Sunday afternoon after hours of waiting in queues ahead of the much-anticipated African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024) match between Kenya and DR Congo.

Videos circulating online show a mammoth crowd waiting in line as some passed through a checkpoint, but the barricades were knocked down moments later. Crowds entered through various sections of the field.

The security officers were overwhelmed as they watched the crowd jog past them, heading into the packed stadium.

Inside the stadium, however, security was tight as fans marched inside the 48,000-seater arena awaiting the football showdown.

Earlier reports had indicated that citizens were complaining about challenges in purchasing tickets, as some accused the government of filling the stadium with supporters to avoid hostile chants.

Musonye Praises Turnout but Urges Fans to Plan Ahead

Speaking in an interview on NTV on Monday morning, Musonye expressed satisfaction with the overall turnout but called for even greater attendance and early planning from fans in upcoming matches.

“We’ve improved significantly. You saw it yesterday at Kasarani — we had a massive crowd. But we want to see even more than that. We want to completely fill the stadium,” he said. “There’s been a very big improvement.”

Reflecting on past tournaments, he recalled his disappointment during Kenya’s hosting of the CECAFA competitions, where fan turnout was underwhelming despite low ticket prices.

“I was really frustrated — hosting a major regional tournament and the stadiums were empty. I even felt like waking up Kenyans to the importance of supporting their team.”

Although Sunday’s game nearly filled Kasarani, some fans were locked out, prompting speculation about unfair ticket distribution. The chairman, however, was quick to dispel those claims.

“This was an open market. We told people early — tickets are available, go and buy. But our culture is to do things at the last minute,” he explained. “Kasarani no longer holds 60,000. Due to reconfiguration, capacity is down to around 48,000. All 48,000 tickets were sold out.”

Ticketing Handled by CAF, Not Government – Musonye

Musonye clarified that all ticketing was handled by CAF (Confederation of African Football) and that there was no special allocation to any group or individual.

“CAF handled all ticketing — not us. They were sold on their platform. Those who got in early bought their tickets. That narrative of favoritism isn’t true.”

The LOC Chair acknowledged the enthusiasm of the youth and praised the fans’ overall behavior, while encouraging more supporters to maintain good conduct as more CHAN matches are played in Nairobi.

“Football belongs to both the youth and the old, and yesterday I was really impressed by the turnout. Even within the football madness, we need to have good manners,” he added.

He also acknowledged the smaller crowd in Nyayo during the Morocco vs Angola match, attributing it to the nation’s focus on Harambee Stars' performance at Kasarani.

As the tournament continues, he urged fans to buy tickets early and, where unable, to follow matches via broadcast.

“If they can’t get tickets, they can watch on TV. We gave them that leeway as well.”

With three more Harambee Stars group stage matches -all at Kasarani Stadium - still to be played, the LOC Chair remains optimistic that local support will continue to grow — both in numbers and in spirit.
