Kenyan defender Brian Mandela was released by South African club Stellenbosch FC on Monday but where could he possibly end up?

Harambee Stars defender Brian Onyango Mandela is looking for a new club once again after leaving South African side Stellenbosch FC.

Mandela was confirmed to have been released by Stellenbosch on Monday after the club opted against extending his stay after signing for one year with an option for a similar period.

The defender made just eight appearances across all competitions and did not enjoy the revival he had hoped after his struggles with injuries and gametime at champions Mamelodi Sundowns, where he had been from 2020-2024.

Following his release by the Cape winelands club, Mandela will have to quickly find a new home as he looks to maintain his place in the national team but where could he potentially end up?

South Africa

The most obvious choice, Mandela has spent the last 13 years in South Africa and will likely sign for another Premier Soccer League (PSL) club.

Mandela first signed for Santos when he left Kenya in 2012, playing for three years before switching to Maritzburg United in 2015, where he established himself as one of the best defenders, attracting the interest of giants Sundowns.

A three-time league winner, who has played in continental competitions, Mandela’s experience will be useful for any team with ambitions of either challenging for the top eight or even staying in the league, and it will not be a surprise if he is unveiled by another South African club soon.

Zambian clubs have always been open to taking a chance on Kenyan players either in their prime or those entering their 30s and Mandela fits this profile.

The 30-year-old’s experience would be vital for Zambian sides especially those set to play continental football or the ones with a desire of getting there.

Zesco, who will play in the CAF Confederation Cup next season after winning the Zambian Cup, and clubs like Nkana and Red Arrows would benefit from his leadership on and off the pitch while the pace of the league could also suit him.

A return home cannot also be ruled out for Brian Mandela who would be looking for a club that can guarantee him consistent gametime after warming the bench at his clubs in the last three years.

He would not be short of suitors in the Kenyan league with clubs like Bandari, Shabana, Mathare United and even his ex-side Tusker in need of leaders on and off the pitch.

Moving to Kenya would, however, mean a significant pay cut for the central defender, although it could be compensated by the certainty of playing every week, something he has not been afforded in South Africa in recent years.
