Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy has credited Brian Mandela, William Lenkupae, and Adam Wilson for their leadership and impact during Kenya’s international break.

Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy has reserved special praise for Brian Mandela, William Lenkupae and former Newcastle United academy product Adam Wilson for their impact in helping Harambee Stars achieve their objectives in the just concluded international break.

McCarthy watched his team beat Chad 2-1 in an international friendly in Morocco on Tuesday with Emmanuel Osoro and David Sakwa scoring Kenya’s goals in the first half before Ali Mahamat Adam pulled one back for their opponents after the break.

It was the second of the two back-to-back games against Chad, with McCarthy bringing a core of mostly local based players to Morocco for the friendlies with a main eye on preparing the team for the African Nations Championships (CHAN 2024) while at the same time seeing what some international-based footballers on the periphery of the main squad were capable of doing.

With a squad made up primarily of local-based players, McCarthy used the international window to test his options ahead of the African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024), while also evaluating international-based players on the fringes of the regular squad.

“About 90% of our team was made up of local players,” McCarthy explained. “The only international players we brought in were Brian Mandela, William Lenkupae, and Adam Wilson.

“These are guys who haven’t played a lot of football this season, so I wanted to give them some game time—to get minutes under their belts and integrate them into the group.”

According to the former Manchester United coach, the trio brought much more than just technical quality to the camp.

“Their presence was also important in helping the local players. They brought a level of professionalism and experience that rubbed off on the rest of the squad, and it worked fantastically. They were instrumental—key to what we were trying to build.”

William Wilson Lenkupae, born in Australia to Kenyan heritage, is currently with Central Coast Mariners. The 23-year-old was part of their A-League Premiership and AFC Cup-winning squad.

He made his Kenya debut in March 2025 and scored a dramatic 95th-minute equalizer against Gambia. He already has 4 caps and 1 goal for the national team.

Looking ahead to CHAN 2024, McCarthy believes the foundation is now firmly in place.

“Now, for the boys who’ll play in CHAN, I hope they’ve seen the standards we expect. They’ve seen the level we need to reach, the kind of football we want to play, and the results we can achieve when we do things right.

“There’s a lot of positivity going into CHAN 2024. I’m excited, and I believe the team will be ready. We’ll have quality time to prepare them, and by the time the tournament comes around, I’m confident this team will be where it needs to be.

“Hopefully, we can make the country proud—with more victories, more wins, and more reasons for the fans to smile.”
