The decision to reduce Toney's ban was made by the FA's regulatory commission, which took into consideration the testimony of a psychiatry expert.
This expert diagnosed Toney with a gambling addiction and emphasized the necessity of providing him with the appropriate help and support.
As a result, the commission reduced the ban by three months, showing compassion and recognizing the underlying issue that contributed to Toney's transgressions.
During the proceedings, it was revealed that Toney had admitted to repeatedly lying during his initial interviews with the FA.
However, he has since demonstrated a commitment to change by refraining from gambling on football (though not on other sports) and expressing a strong determination to address his gambling problem through therapy.
The FA had originally sought a 15-month ban for Toney, citing his attempts to conceal his betting activities by involving third parties and deleting incriminating messages from his mobile phone.
However, the regulatory commission did not uphold all of the FA's claims. Instead, they reduced the ban to 11 months, taking into account Toney's guilty plea and the diagnosed gambling addiction.
Brentford Football Club has stood by Toney throughout this challenging period and has pledged to provide him with the necessary support to address his addiction.
In a statement, the club expressed their commitment to helping Toney and his family deal with the issues raised by the case.
They consider the matter closed and eagerly anticipate his return to training in September.
The Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) has also emphasized the importance of supporting players struggling with addiction to gambling.
They offer practical and confidential support to players facing such challenges and stress the need for punishment processes to consider the well-being of the individuals involved.
Toney's ban encompasses a period of eight months, during which he is prohibited from participating in any football-related activities.
Additionally, he has been fined £50,000 and warned about his future conduct. However, the ban will conclude on January 17, 2024, allowing Toney to resume his professional career.
Despite this setback, Toney's outstanding performances this season have not gone unnoticed. With 20 goals in 33 Premier League appearances, he earned a call-up to the England national team, making his debut in a qualifying match against Ukraine.
England manager Gareth Southgate has expressed his support for Toney during his ban, confirming that it will not affect his international prospects once it concludes.
