Borussia Dortmund came from behind to beat Bayer Leverkusen 4-2 at BayArena, with Guirassy and Adeyemi shining as Boniface was left on the bench and Tella contained in Alonso’s farewell match.

Borussia Dortmund spoiled Xabi Alonso’s farewell at BayArena with a clinical 4-2 comeback win over Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday, leaving the hosts and their fans disappointed as the Bundesliga season nears its climax.

In a surprising tactical decision, Leverkusen coach Alonso once again left Nigerian striker Victor Boniface on the bench, opting to lead the attack with Nathan Tella. Unfortunately for the hosts, Tella was effectively contained by Dortmund’s defence, while Boniface watched on from the sidelines.

Leverkusen started the match strongly and took the lead in the 31st minute through Jeremie Frimpong, raising hopes of a fairytale send-off for Alonso and teammate Jonathan Tah.

The home side could have extended their advantage but were repeatedly denied by Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel’s outstanding saves.

However, Dortmund quickly shifted momentum. Just two minutes after going behind, Julian Brandt equalised with a well-taken finish from a Karim Adeyemi cutback.

Dortmund then took the lead in the 43rd minute through Julian Ryerson, who fired a precise low shot from the right flank. In the second half, Dortmund’s ruthlessness showed.

Alonso managed his last game at the BayArena.

Marcel Sabitzer’s turnover led to Adeyemi scoring his second goal in the 73rd minute, effectively putting the game beyond Leverkusen’s reach.

Shortly after, Serhou Guirassy added a fourth goal in the 77th minute, marking his 20th league goal of the season and sealing Dortmund’s emphatic victory.

Leverkusen managed a late consolation goal from Jonas Hofmann in stoppage time, but the damage was done. Dortmund’s win keeps their hopes of UEFA Champions League qualification alive as they sit fifth, just one point behind fourth-placed Freiburg with one game remaining.

Alonso’s farewell at BayArena was far from the dream ending he and fans had hoped for, but Dortmund’s clinical counter-attacks and clinical finishing ensured they left with all three points.
