The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup has players from 81 nationalities and among them, two are from East Africa.

Players from 81 nations are set to grace the FIFA Club World Cup which kicks off in the United States on Saturday and East Africa is also represented.

The tournament brings together 32 teams from across the world, involving the top clubs from across all continents, with Africa represented by Wydad Athletic Club of Morocco, Egyptian giants Al Ahly, perennial South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns and Esperance of Tunisia.

From the 32 teams, South Africa and Morocco are the African countries with the most players at the tournament, each with 31, followed by 25 from Tunisia, 23 from Egypt with Mali (eight), five from Nigeria, Algeria (four), Ghana and Senegal with three each, Cameroon, Angola and Ivory Coast with two each.

Among the African countries with one player each, Uganda and Tanzania fly East Africa’s flag. So, who are the East Africans at the Club World Cup?

Dennis Onyango

Veteran Ugandan goalkeeper Dennis Onyango will be one of the oldest and most experienced players at the tournament as he is part of the Mamelodi Sundowns squad.

Onyango, a former African Goalkeeper of the Year, is admired and respected on the continent for his heroics with Sundowns where he has played since 2011, winning nine league titles, and also the 2016 CAF Champions League.

The 40-year-old is still going strong despite his age, now working as the deputy to South African Ronwen Williams, and his performances have not waned as he has just been handed a new one-year contract extension, which will take him up to his 41st birthday at Sundowns.

Onyango is not new to the Club World Cup, having been part of the Sundowns team that featured in the 2016 edition, when it was still being contested by eight teams, although they finished sixth.

Known for his penalty-saving heroics and calmness in one-on-one situations, Onyango continues to excel at the top level and it is perhaps the reason why Sundowns have not seen the need to do away with him yet.

Suleiman Mwalimu

While Dennis Onyango is entering the final years of his career, Tanzanian striker Suleiman Mwalimu is just beginning as he is still 19.

Mwalimu joined Moroccan giants Wydad in February 2025, signing a four-and-a-half-year contract from Tanzanian club Singida Black Stars.

This will be his first taste of the Club World Cup and he will be hoping to leave a lasting mark although he has struggled for game time this season, managing just four games across all competitions, and is yet to score a goal but he had netted six for Singida in the first half of the campaign before his transfer to Morocco.
