Benni McCarthy believes Ruben Amorim is the right coach to lead Manchester United back to success, despite the team's struggles under former manager Erik ten Hag.

Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy believes Ruben Amorim is the right fit for Manchester United’s management role despite recent Premier League struggles.

Manchester United have not had the best season as far as the Premier League is concerned, and they currently lie 15th on the league table with 39 points.

From the 35 matches they have played thus far, the Red Devils have only managed to secure 10 wins, drawing in nine games and losing in 16.

However, they are nearing success in the Europa League, a great sign for Ruben Amorim. They beat Athletic Bilbao 4-1 in the second leg of the Europa League semifinal at Old Trafford. With the win, they will face off against Tottenham Hotspur in the final.

Ruben Amorim was on November 1, 2024, announced as the head coach of Manchester United following the sacking of Erik ten Hag. Ruben Amorim officially began his tenure on November 11, with his contract set to run until 2027.

His first season with the club has not been a walk in the park but former Manchester United attacking coach Benni McCarthy believes that Ruben Amorim will get the job done and he just needs more time.

Benni McCarthy explained that the Portuguese settled in well at the club and had good relations with the players, something that is rare to find with coaches these days.

He added that Ruben Amorim has the passion and zeal to succeed, and with enough support from the owners, Manchester United will eventually succeed.

“It’s a work in progress, but he’s got all the tools there, there are new owners that came in and they are serious, they want success for the club and are pushing in the right direction,” Benni McCarthy said in an interview with Radio 2000.

“Everything is moving, but I don’t think that’s going to happen as quickly as people think. It’s a process, and it’s going to take time, and I want them to give him time because he is a very good and young coach.

“He is probably one who can change things because he has all the right things, he has the passion and players are already gravitating towards him.”

Despite Benni McCarthy lauding him as one of the best coaches he has worked with, Erik ten Hag failed to produce results at Manchester United, the main thing that led to his sacking.

Benni McCarthy revealed that training sessions were always productive but when it came to match days, the players struggled to implement what they had learned in training, something they always failed to understand.

“The guy was basically one of the best coaches that I’ve ever come across. He had the team, but unfortunately on the day of the game, it wasn’t just clicking and I was part of it,” Benni McCarthy revealed.

“I couldn’t understand why it wasn’t happening for the team because what we see in training was good, but during match days, the performance was just a bit different, and we just couldn’t break that down.”

Despite a challenging start and doubts following Erik ten Hag’s tenure, Benni McCarthy remains confident that Ruben Amorim's skills make him the right man to restore success at Manchester United if given time and full backing from the club’s owners.
