Opposition Leader Raila Odinga has urged Harambee Stars to ensure they qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after missing out on the 2023 edition which will begin on Saturday

Opposition Leader Raila Odinga is hoping that Kenya will be able to feature at the 2025 Africa Cup Nations after missing out on the 2023 tournament.

Harambee Stars will not take part in the delayed 2023 AFCON, which will kick off on Saturday with hosts Ivory Coast facing Guinea-Bissau, after Kenya was locked out of the qualifiers following a FIFA ban.

As he waits to watch the 2023 tournament, ‘Baba’ hopes Kenya will not be spectators again in the next edition which will be held in Morocco in 2025.

“I'm looking forward to tonight's Africa Cup of Nations kickoff! Wishing all 24 teams, an incredible tournament filled with passion and memorable moments,” Odinga posted on social media.

“We, as Kenyans, hope and desire Harambee Stars will feature in the next one. Who's your pick to lift the trophy?”

Kenya last featured at AFCON in 2019 when they exited at the group stage after winning one and losing two of their three matches.

East Africa is only represented by Tanzania in the 24-team tournament in Ivory Coast after Uganda and Burundi came close before missing out.

The qualification phase for the 2025 tournament will begin with the preliminary round from March 18 to 26, 2024 with the first and second round matches scheduled from September 2 to 10, 2024.

The third and fourth round games will take place from September 7 to 15, 2024, giving way to the final rounds of the qualifiers slated for November 11 to 19, 2024.

Harambee Stars coach Engin Firat has insisted Kenya must qualify and make it to the round of 16 at AFCON 2025.

“AFCON looks different because normally you have only four teams in the group and two go up, so therefore the next AFCON 25’ is in my eyes a must (to qualify),” Firat said last November.

“What I have said to the boys is that they must not just go like it was always, we should also go out of the group.”
